Professional Development

Broad Residents work full-time in a school district or charter management organization, while also participating in a professional development program designed to support the transition into a career in education management and to provide the knowledge necessary to make a significant impact on student achievement.

At the end of the two-year Broad Residency, participants will be able to:

  • demonstrate and apply knowledge about how urban school systems work and can be improved
  • demonstrate the management and leadership skills to execute high-impact change initiatives in urban education
  • become part of a thriving network of reform leaders in public education

Over the course of the two-year program, Residents participate in eight quarterly training sessions at locations across the country, with tuition and travel costs covered by The Broad Residency. The sessions include the discussion of case studies, site visits, lectures, expert panels, reading assignments and interactive projects. The curriculum ensures that Residents understand the context of urban education and the best organizational practices from the private and public sectors.

Broad Residency sessions are generally two and a half days and start on a Wednesday or a Thursday. Pre-reading and assignments are distributed four to six weeks in advance of sessions.
