Message from The Broad Residency's Director of Recruitment and Selection: Chaka Booker

Chaka Booker

During this time of year, the holidays serve as a backdrop for all we do. From Thanksgiving to the New Year we are constantly encouraged to be thankful, urged to give to others, and reminded that new beginnings are just around the corner. When working in education, these themes are constant regardless of the time of year.

Year round, I am concerned by the struggles our students face while simultaneously being thankful for the public education I received through the Los Angeles Unified School District. I was fortunate to have adults in my life who understood the system and how to navigate it. That just further reminds me that many children do not have enough support in their lives and therefore need the best education systems possible to ensure they live up to their potential. Every child has the potential to be great. Every community has public schools in it that can support that potential. As a product of those schools I am indebted to public education and grateful to be part of an organization focused on ensuring academic success for all children.

Year round, educators give tirelessly to the children they work with. The Broad Center is part of the effort to create and improve the systems that support those educators. To that end, this year, we placed the largest cohort of Residents ever — including new placements in state departments of education. The Residents, their organizations, and the educators they serve are constant reminders of giving. The work they do is not easy. They choose careers rarely given the respect they deserve. Their lives are filled with solving problems, creating opportunities and giving. Every day, they give children a better chance at the education they need.

Year round, we see children learning, overcoming struggles, and beginning new paths in their lives. At The Broad Center, our team is seeing the beginnings of a new group of Residents who will serve these children. Applications are flowing in. We are meeting people who will join The Broad Residency and tirelessly give their time, talent, and emotions. They will learn from and partner with teachers, principals, social workers, parents, aunts, uncles, superintendents, office staff, board members, volunteers…the list of committed people already in the system goes on. The holidays will soon be past, but our collective work will always be about being grateful for what we have, giving more than we have, and ensuring every child has a great starting point.

Happy Holidays.

Record Number of Broad Residents Take on Local, State, and Federal Roles Managing Education Reform

Class of 2010

Lisa Bishop

Now in its ninth year, The Broad Residency placed its largest class of 42 Residents into 28 public education systems across the country, expanding for the first time into state departments of education. These 42 new Residents join a national network of over 200 Residents and alumni committed to transforming public education and eliminating achievement gaps.

"We are pleased that these bright managers will help large education systems - including state departments of education - use limited resources to better support teachers and deliver results for students, parents and communities," said Eli Broad, founder of The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation.

For the first time since The Broad Residency began in 2003, two Residents will be working at the state level, for the Delaware and Louisiana departments of education, in which significant reforms are underway.

Naressa Cofield

Broad Resident Lisa Bishop serves as special assistant to the Secretary of Education for the Delaware Department of Education. In this role, she is helping implement Delaware's Race to the Top plan to dramatically improve educational outcomes for all students in the state. According to Bishop, "I am grateful for the opportunity to serve as a Broad Resident with the Delaware Department of Education. I look forward to being part of a historic effort to improve life outcomes for all Delaware children by helping transform public education in the state of Delaware."

Naressa Cofield currently serves in the Louisiana Department of Education as a consultant with the Superintendent's Delivery Unit which supports the state superintendent in developing strategic targets linked to priority reform efforts and partners with key stakeholders, senior appointed and elected officials to ensure educational priorities and plans are translated into student outcomes. In her words, Cofield is "personally committed to reigniting the educational hopes, dreams and aspirations of America's youth."

For the second year, Broad Residents will be working at the U.S. Department of Education, supporting states and school districts in their efforts to improve student achievement.

In addition to those working in state and federal departments of education, the 2010-2012 Residents will be working in the following school districts and charter school management organizations:

In addition, this cohort includes a group of Residents who will work on improving teacher effectiveness as part of a $3.6 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to recruit and train as many as 18 Broad Residents over the next four years to provide management support to school districts and charter management organizations addressing this critical issue. Broad Residents will help school systems in Memphis, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, and Tampa who received funding from the Gates Foundation to dramatically improve the recruitment, selection, training, placement, and evaluation of teachers.
