“For several years I have had the opportunity to coach and mentor team members that had enormous potential, but for a variety of socio-economic reasons, were relegated to lower-wage labor. Many of their circumstances were a product of educational neglect: lack of access to resources, unsafe school environments, and apathy among parents. My goal is to remove some of the operational barriers that create these circumstances, and provide the next generation of students with an equal opportunity to realize their full potential.”

Sherman Whites currently serves as director of operations at The Louisiana Association of Public Charter Schools (LAPCS). Previously focused on policy and advocacy, LAPCS has leveraged Whites' experience to expand its support to the school level. He has worked with charter schools to increase the quality of back-end services, including food service, transportation, and technology. Whites is also managing a study focusing on financial sustainability for charter schools of New Orleans. In addition, he is spearheading a statewide initiative to increase parent engagement in the K-12 public school process. Prior to joining The Broad Residency, Whites was a team leader for Target Corporation. In this role, he was responsible for logistics and food operations for a $65M retail unit, and managed over 300 hourly employees. He also served as an adjunct instructor at North Carolina Central University’s School of Business. Previously, Whites was a marketing manager at Tropicana Products and Campbell Soup Company, as well as a process improvement engineer at Ford Motor Company. Community service has been equally important during his career; Whites serves as a youth mentor and has worked to increase awareness of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in urban communities. Whites holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Florida A&M University and a master’s degree in business administration from the Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Whites is a participant in The Broad Residency in Urban Education (Class of 2009-2011), serving his two-year Residency at The Louisiana Association of Public Charter Schools.
